Netherlands
Netherlands; a country much below sea level, with her tulips, windmills and prolific bicycles and distinctive cities & towns, boats and superb golf links. This later fact is virtually unknown outside the Netherlands.
The sport of golf is moving fast and is the fastest growing branch of sport in the Netherlands. By now there are 128.000 golf members of the Dutch Golf Federation and about 93.000 golfers who are not affiliated to a club. Because of this growth new clubs and courses arise every year; at this moment the Netherlands counts 173 golf courses.
Golf is actually one of the oldest sports in the Netherlands and Europe! In 1546 Pieter van Afferden wrote a teaching method, where he by descriptions of daily life tried to teach the reader Latin. One full chapter is dedicated to the game that is being played with a sheep-hook, where you have to aim the ball in a hole. This is the first written reference to modern golf in history. The chapter of Van Afferden is not the only early reference to golf in the Netherlands. Flemish and Dutch painters have captured golf scenes on paintings and in books since the middle of the 15th century.
