New Zealand
Welcome to New Zealand
The land of the great white cloud
Thermal wonders, Maori Culture & golf
Many travellers combine their golfing holiday to both Australia and New Zealand. There are Trans Tasman flights connecting the two countries and you can fly to and from either way.
If you wish to golf both the north & south islands, you should plan on a two to three week holiday.
CTI does suggest that upon arrival and a day's rest in Auckland, your first golfing region can be a trek north to the 90 mile beach and Kerikeri where there are two fine golf courses, as well as the remarkable Kauri Cliffs and Gulf Harbour on your return.
Play awhile in Auckland for there are a number of "must play" courses in the City of Sails.
Then its fly or drive to Rotorua, the centre of Maori culture and the jewel of the north, Wairakei at Lake Taupo.
If you are flying further south, its off to Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. If you are driving, the way to break your 6 plus hour trip to Wellington is to travel south- east via Hawkes Bay to play Cape Kidnappers and other worthwhile golf in this region.
There is very good golf to be had in Wellington and the Kapiti Coast where you will find the fabulous Paraparaumu links.
Most flyers trip direct to Wellington but I plan many itineraries where the drivers cross Cook Strait via the Ocean Ferry then drive or travel by scenic rail to Christchurch.
North Island
Auckland
The City of Sails...
Your gateway to the South Pacific paradise, New Zealand's largest city nestled in the vast Hauraki Gulf; it harbours more sailboats than the eye can see. A city of commerce and industry where you can experience uncrowded beaches, rural countryside and forests. Population 1 million people.
Wellington A geographic link between the two islands.... Greater Wellington is New Zealand's second largest urban area, the nation's capital, a major centre of the arts and port for the southern North Island. Cook Strait, the 16 mile/ 26 km stretch of water which separates the two main islands, creates an airflow, making Wellington possibly the most pollution free capital in the world. Population 326,000 people. Rotorua A thermal wonderland - A bay of plenty... Fizzy lakes, boiling pools, steamy caverns - welcome to the thermal wonderland. Eastland - Hawkes Bay The sunny east coast... Best known for its award-winning vineyards, the region will reward the visitor with a mild, sunny climate and superb sightseeing. See golf itinerary suggestions on right. South Island Christchurch New Zealand's city of gardens... The city was designed in Britain in the mid- 1800s as a model Anglican settlement, laid out in a grid pattern centered on the cathedral. Often said to be "the most English city outside England," Christchurch is the South Island's largest city, with 310,000 people. It used to be said that Christchurch closed at 6 pm but not now with the Christchurch Casino. Marlborough - Nelson - West Coast The northern South Island is a region of contrasts, with the cast being uncommonly dry and experiencing over 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, and the west being a land of lush rainforest. Queenstown - Dunedin - Central Otago - Wanaka - Invercargill - Southland - Stewart Island - Fiordland Nature on a grand scale... This is a land of immense proportions: giant boulders, colossal waterfalls and mighty albatrosses ... not to mention jumping from a 230-foot bridge. The region is often referred to as the far south. But don't expect to sight icebergs off the shores of Invercargill, New Zealand's southern-most city, because in North American terms, Invercargill is equivalent in latitude to Oregon or Maine. Getting Around A long but relatively narrow country covering 104,000 square miles (268,000 sq. km), New Zealand boasts a remarkably varied topography. Its North and South Islands offer the traveller dramatic changes of scenery within relatively short distances. See NZ Railways NZ Golf Highlights Boasting over 400 lush, green, uncrowded and beautifully maintained courses, set amidst the most magnificent and dramatic panoramas in the world, New Zealand truly is a golfer's paradise. Between its two major islands and what is probably the most incredible range of terrain - much of it on the hilly side of topography - New Zealand is one of the few countries that can emulate the demanding Scottish links
